Arthur S. Boynton, Jr.
Art Boynton passed away February 12, 2018 in Long Beach, CA at the age of 97 years old. He was born January 6, 1921 in Skowhegan, ME and moved to Ventura County in 1923 with his family, including grandparents and aunts and uncles. He grew up on ranches and the ocean, becoming a charter captain at a young age. He married his wife Helen in 1939 who preceded him in death in 1990 after 51 years of marriage. Art was drafted into the Army during WWII but was quickly transferred to the Navy because of his seamanship. He served in the South Pacific piloting landing craft to the island beachheads until the end of the war. In 1945 he joined his wife and son in Long Beach and began working as a tugboat captain hauling loads roundtrip to San Francisco and rock from the Catalina quarry to build the expanding breakwater. During this time he also became partner in the operation of the fishing barge off the end of Belmont Pier. In 1947 he purchased one of the Locker Clubs in downtown Long Beach which he operated until the closing of the Navy Base. Not one to sit around, he became a partner and operating manager of the Naturway Natural Food store on Second Street and was a recognizable fixture in Belmont Shore. In the late 1960's he moved from Long Beach to the oceanfront in Seal Beach where he lived until his death. Art was very active in the LDS Church and was a Skipper from many years with the Sea Scouts program using his contacts in the harbor to get donated boats, supplies and places for the Scouts to work on their projects. In 1982 he became partners with his son in their surveying business in Signal Hill and finally semi-retired in 2000 to devote more time to his golf game.
Art is survived by his sister, Rilla Ann Harvey, his son Doug (Jan), his beloved grandchildren Stephanie (Craig) Kay, Bob, Greg, and Geoff, great and great-great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.
