Sam (Ahamed) Mahamed Assed passed away peacefully at home surrounded by his family on June 21, 2025. He was 82 years of age.
Sam was born on May 24, 1943 at Henry Ford Hospital in Detroit, Michigan and grew up in Dearborn. The oldest son of Mahamed and Lilian Assed, Sam shared the family home with his parents and brothers Jimmy, Babe (Cheryl), Allie (Michele), and Mike (Sheryl). Mike predeceased Sam.
Sam attended Henry Ford High School in Dearborn through the 10th grade, when he left school to help support his family after his father suffered a serious injury that forced him to stop working. Sam worked in the electrical trade his entire career, earning a Master Electrician license along the way.
Sam lived and worked in the Detroit area until moving to Riverside, California in 1980 where he continued his electrical contracting business. Barring a two-year stint in Oregon, Sam spent the remainder of his life in Southern California.
Sam was the father of daughter Nadima and son Omar as well as the grandfather of Scotty, Amanda, Michael, Ashley, Stephen and Kirsten and great-grandfather of 17. In 2008 Sam married Rebecca Horney and was a treasured part of the lives of her two sons, Matt and Nick, and six grandchildren - Austin, Aiden, Brooke, Ellie, Ava and Owen.
Sam enjoyed several hobbies, including bowling, motorcycles and country music. At times he bowled five days a week and participated in tournaments in Las Vegas, Laughlin and Reno. Sam was the proud owner of a beautiful Harley Davidson motorcycle and he and Becky loved to go on long rides through the local mountains. Sam’s favorite country music performer was George Strait and he and Becky attended the concerts of several country music artists.
Sam was known for his warm, caring attitude and by the kind way he treated everyone, including his family, friends and any acquaintance. He was very generous and was always willing to help his family with projects, particularly those electrical in nature and was never one to cut corners.
Sam will be sorely missed.
Sam will be buried in Michigan on July 14th. There will a Celebration of Life here in Long Beach later this summer.
