David Glenn Dye was the oldest child born to Glenn and Oveta Dye in Spokane, Washington, on August 15, 1940. David has two younger sisters, Sheryl and Carolyn. In 1945, their family relocated from their home in Priest River, Idaho to Long Beach, CA. After the passing of David’s mother, Oveta, Glenn married Katie Shultz who helped Glenn raise his three children.
Shadowing his father around auto shops, Dave showed a great deal of interest in mechanics, working on anything with a motor or engine he could find. After graduating from Jordan High School in 1958, he followed his love for automotive work by continuing his education in auto mechanics.
His skills as a pianist would provide many opportunities for Dave. As a teenager, he played for his church, Willow Street Church of God. He would later become their organist. The greatest opportunity his music skills would provide would be while playing the piano at a church service in Lawton, OK. While playing the piano at this church, Dave would spot a cute 16-year-old named Delores. They fell in love and, after a few months, were engaged. After being married on June 18 th , 1961, Dave and his new wife, Delores moved to Long Beach where they made a home together. They had two sons: Darren Dye in 1963 followed by David Dye in 1968.
Dave would go on to hold various jobs in the automotive repair industry. In 1962, he began a 20-year career with Goodyear Tire Company. In his free time, he continued to be active in his church’s music department, took Darren to Indian Guides, worked on cars with Darren and David, and volunteered at several organizations. Unfortunately, he would retire due to complications resulting from Multiple Sclerosis.
Retirement from Goodyear only meant the beginning of new opportunities for Dave’s true character to shine. God used Dave’s talents as an organist and his kind, loving heart to help countless people. His vast volunteer work included:
As time marched on, Dave’s family continued to grow. At the time of his passing, Dave had:
Dave and Delores celebrated their 58 th wedding anniversary in June of 2019. He spent his last few months at very caring board-and-care in Cerritos. On the morning of December 30 th Dave passed peacefully in his sleep. He now resides in heaven, no doubt playing Gaither gospel songs on the greatest organ of all time.
